Swedish meatballs (like IKEA’s) – A recipe for the best Swedish meatballs served with mashed potatoes, cream sauce, lingonberry jelly, and pickled cucumbers à la IKEA.


This dish is absolutely wonderful and inspired by the Swedish dish “Köttbullar med potatispure, lingonsylt och pressgurka.” It’s a typical Swedish dish, but most people probably also know it from IKEA’s restaurants.

Swedish meatballs (like IKEA’s)

Recipe for 4 persons

Mashed potato
Cream sauce



Mix the milk and breadcrumbs together and let it stand for 5 minutes.

Combine the minced meat, beef bouillon, onion, salt and pepper, and breadcrumbs/milk into a bowl. Stir well until completely combined. Shape the mixture into about 25 small meatballs. Fry the meatballs until they are cooked through in a pan with butter.

Mashed potatoes

Boil the potatoes until tender in salted water. Drain the water and mash the potatoes in a potato press, or using an electric whisk. Add the milk and butter. Stir well. Salt to taste.

Cream sauce

Make the sauce while the potatoes are cooking: Melt the butter in the pan from the fried meatballs. Sprinkle over the flour and add the milk. Whisk well and add the cream. Let it simmer as you stir. Add the gravy browning, beef bouillon, and lingonberry jam. Add the meatballs.

Serve the dish with the mashed potatoes, cream sauce with meatballs, lingonberry jam, and pickled cucumbers. Enjoy!
