Happy December 9th. It’s raining, it’s cold, it’s blowing and it’s Monday. All I want to do is stay home snuggled under the blankets with a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows and a Christmas movie on the TV. So the recipe behind today’s door is perfect for that—homemade hot chocolate mix.
It’s super simple to make, and makes a lovely little Christmas gift too—it’s a perfect hostess gift. I put the hot chocolate mix in a nice jar with a little brown label tied on with a pretty ribbon, so I always have some on hand whenever I fancy some hot chocolate. The portion makes about 4 cups, and once you’re up and running, you can quickly make a few jars, so you’re ready for any Christmas events.
I added a good handful of chocolate buttons to the hot chocolate mixture—it gives a nice creamy and flavorful hot chocolate. Dark chocolate is used here, which is gives a more bitter hot chocolate that suits the sweet marshmallows, but milk chocolate can be used too. It makes a sweeter hot chocolate. You can also add a cinnamon stick or a few whole cardamoms to the jar, which gives the hot chocolate a little extra flavor of Christmas (remember to remove them before pouring the hot chocolate into the cups!).
If you’d like to make it extra indulgent, serve the hot chocolate with home-baked tea buns or soft buttermilk buns—hot chocolate and buns are also a true Danish birthday classic. Enjoy!

Put all the dry ingredients in a nice jar that’s airtight. You can choose to layer the ingredients like in the picture, or you can just mix them all together.
When making the hot chocolate, pour the mixture into a pot with the water. Combine it well with the water on a low heat. Heat and add the milk. Mix well and warm the hot chocolate slowly while stirring to the boil. Serve the hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows. Enjoy!
